The New Year means new beginnings right?
The top 5 New Year’s resolutions are to lose weight, join a gym, spend less and save more, be healthier and get a new job.
So unsurprisingly January is typically a busy time of year for recruiters, suddenly there are a lot of candidates looking for new roles, and companies are also kick starting their 2019 hiring plans but that does not necessarily mean that we all have to look for a new job. In fact, some job seekers I have spoken to so far this year are looking because they feel they should, because everyone else is or because an article they read says it is a good idea. Which may be true for some but not for all, so how do you decide that now is the right time to look for a new role?
There are many reasons why people start looking to move jobs and they range from poor relationships with management to money to ‘I’ve been there 5 years and feel it is time to move’. Whilst these are all valid reasons many of the people I interview have not taken the simple step of talking to their manager or HR about the options they have for movement within their current company.
Can your current company offer a transfer or flexihours or the option to work from home once a week? Can your Manager work with you to identify areas to develop so that you get promoted quicker?
If you still feel that the only way to solve the problem you have is to move job then have a real think about what it is you want to do. The job seekers that I work with that have the best chance of finding an exciting role are those who know exactly what they want and work hard to get it. Whether that is a similar job paying more, a role that offers more challenges, something closer to home or a complete career change, they know their priorities and stick to them.
So think hard about what you really want from a new job, talk to your current company about it and then make a decision about what to do next.
Then do it.
